2016 ISA World Surfing Games in Jaco Beach
After a successful first edition in Playa Hermosa in 2009, Costa Rica will again host the 2016 ISA World Surfing Games from August 6th-14th. This ISA mega event will take place along the central Pacific shores of Costa Rica, in the vibrant town of Jaco Beach. It is an ideal surf spot, enjoyed by experts, locals and visitors throughout the year because of its powerful and consistent waves.
The ISA, held as the world governing authority for surfing by the Olympic Committee, enjoys a membership of more than 85 National Federations from around the globe, and it’s headquartered in La Jolla, California.
The International Surfing Association, led by Fernando Aguerre, aims at attracting more than 130 world-class competitors from up to 30 countries. According to Aguerre, the 2016 surfing games in Costa Rica will be a milestone event, not only because the Costa Rica surfing team will be defending their title at home, but also because the surfing world expects a major announcement to be made in regards to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics inclusion of the sport.
The president of the Costa Rican Surfing Federation, Randall Chaves, expects a record-breaking attendance to this world championship, which means a great boost for tourism, as the “world’s eyes will be focused on the Costa Rican waves, athletes, and friendly people.”
Surfing in Jaco and in most Costa Rican coastal towns has captured the imagination of locals and visitors alike, quickly creating a cult of devotees and significant profits. The country’s Institute of Tourism stated recently that over 200,000 surfing tourists generated more than USD $300 million in 2013 alone. For a small country like Costa Rica, those figures represent a staggering feat.
But Jaco Beach offers more than just perfect surfing conditions in tropical waters. The central Pacific coast of Costa Rica also enjoys breathtaking natural beauty in the form of beautiful beaches, world-renowned National Parks, imposing waterfalls and lush rainforests teeming with exotic wildlife and vegetation.
Don’t miss the World Surfing Games in Jaco Costa Rica, where surfing is top-notch, biodiversity is breathtaking and the people are “Pura Vida”!
